Jjaja Disan Mukyanga, a 94-year-old living alone in Nakisunga village, Mukono used to live in constant worry. For over three years, he endured the indignity and fear of a collapsing mud-and-wattle pit latrine. Using his neighbor's toilet became a nightly struggle, filled with darkness and the risk of falls. To avoid the ordeal, he'd skip evening meals, altogether leading to further difficulties.
Then, thanks to ROTOM and generous friends from Canada, Disan's life transformed. A brand-new, secure pit latrine made of cement was built for him. Disan's joy is infectious. He marvels at its permanence, jokingly suggesting it might be more comfortable than his own house! He beams with newfound confidence, promising to "look after it well and clean it always."
Disan's story exemplifies how a seemingly simple act of generosity can bring immense dignity and peace to an elder's life. Through your support, countless seniors like Disan can experience the freedom and security they deserve.
