As an energetic young woman in her earlier years, Meeri never imagined the challenges aging would bring. Growing up in Nama village, Mukono district, she was the embodiment of independence and strength. Even when she fell ill, she continued doing her chores, slowing down for nobody and religiously contributing to her community in whatever way she could.

Fast forward to today, at a whopping 88 years of age, Jajja Meeri now has to deal with the difficulties that come with aging. Like many ROTOM supported older persons, her health has declined and she has to depend a lot on others to just get by. Amidst these challenges however, ROTOM offers hope.

Meeri acknowledges the immense difference ROTOM’s support has made in her life since 2019. The after-effects of a near-fatal stroke and poorly managed hypertension could have been far more daunting without ROTOM's intervention.

Recently, Meeri's condition worsened. The stroke left her unable to walk, and bed sores caused significant pain. A single call to a ROTOM Staff triggered a swift response and a ROTOM vehicle arrived at her doorstep to transport her to the health center for treatment.

The care Meeri received has led to a significant improvement in her overall health. Now residing at the ROTOM Lwanyonyi Village Outreach Center (A long term care center for frail seniors) for easier management, Meeri receives specialized care tailored to her needs. She even expressed a desire to make the center her permanent home, a testament to the comfort and quality of care she receives.

Jajja Meeri's reality is just but an example of the pressing need for accessible healthcare and long-term care among older persons in our programs. We are incredibly grateful to our friends and partners whose support allows us to extend this life-saving service. Thanks to you, forgotten seniors can receive dignified, specialized care, at no cost to them.
