Florence Nakumi lives by herself on top of one of the highest hills within her community in Uganda. Down in the valley sits a piped spring water well that serves a congested population of more than 5,000 people in her village and surrounding communities. Growing older, Florence has become weak and can barely move as much as 3/4 of a mile without making several stops.
Down the hill from her home is a very steep slope leading to the only borehole in her village. Unfortunately, it is very difficult for her to walk up and down this steep slope without fear of getting hurt. Carrying the heavy jerry can (5 Liter) is also a monumental task. She has been surviving solely on the little water that her neighbors are able to collect for her each time they travel to the well. In addition, the water they have given her was barely been enough to help her do all of her daily chores.
Water is known as the building block of life. Like most of the seniors registered into the ROTOM Friendship Program, all have the most familiar story – desperate, hungry, living on limited resources and scared of not being able to care for themselves. This changed because of your generosity.
Happily, Florence received a new water tank system provided from our U.S. ROTOM donors to lighten her burden! Now she will be able to harvest rain water from the top of her roof which provides enough water for her to use for months. She and her friends no longer have to beg neighbors’ for additional water just to survive. Instead, she now has the ability to share the water generously with others!
Having this new water tank means that Florence can use most of her now time to do her house chores, peacefully without worrying about the long trek to collect water for everyday living.
Access to clean water is a dream come true for our seniors. Out of 450 U.S. supported seniors, so far we have installed 275 water storage tank systems since the program began. We still have about 170+ seniors left without systems to meet our goal! I know many of you helped install a tank for your senior, but some seniors still need access to clean water.

“Sometimes the children help me because it is difficult for me. This place is so hilly and steep, and I can’t manage the daily journeys. I have grown older and weak,” says Florence. Now with a tank installed at her home Florence has access to water right in the comfort of her home.
