Maria was diagnosed last year with advanced cervical cancer. Realistically there was no active treatment, neither chemotherapy nor radiotherapy being available for her.
Palliative care was needed but her monthly support did not run to the costly drugs she would need to make her last days as comfortable and dignified as possible.
A lady of 89 from Devon read about her need and donated money for her care.
She was nursed in her home and a palliative care team were able to support Maria and her family until she died a few months ago.
Maria was only 65. She died young but surrounded by those who loved and cared for her.
Here is part of a letter she wrote to her UK supporter.
“To my friend Debra
Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Thanks a lot for all you have done for us ever since we became friends…I am much troubled with cancer and for the past nine months I haven’t been able to do much work and as I write today I have just been discharged from ROTOM health centre. Thanks a lot for the treatment support. I and my family do appreciate and indeed we pray that the Lord blesses you mightily….
Enjoy also the year and stay blessed.
Yours
Maria Regina Namusisi”
